We operate under legislative and regulatory requirements
Challenger Life is the provider of our annuities and is subject to stringent legislative and regulatory requirements designed to ensure that your investment is kept safe.
Challenger Life is a Life Company and is regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). APRA actively monitor our investments with the aim of ensuring that we can meet the promises that we have made to you both now and into the future.
When you invest in a Challenger annuity your capital investment goes into a fund along with the capital received from other annuity customers. This fund is known as the statutory fund, and all regular payments to our annuity customers are paid from this fund.
We have been active in the Australian private lending market for almost 20 years, with experience working through the credit cycle. Our team is one of the largest and most experienced private credit managers in the country, and our competitive strength lies in our reputation, asset origination capability and strong credit underwriting. As at 31 March 2024, we manage $17 billion in assets ranging from relatively liquid publicly traded investment grade corporate bonds, through to private credit.
We are also required by APRA to invest our own money into the fund. This statutory fund is required to hold enough capital to withstand a significant share market shock event. We hold significantly more capital in the statutory fund than APRA requires, which ensures that we could continue to cover all promises made to our annuity investors even if a one in 200-year investment market shock event occurred.
Challenger Life is also regulated under the Life Insurance Act. Our compliance with the prudential standards under this act is supervised by APRA - to ensure we’re able to meet our obligations to investors now and in the future.
